The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, bringing to an end weeks of anticipation among students, parents, and schools across Nigeria and other member countries.
The announcement came on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, through a statement on WAEC’s official X account, informing candidates that the 2026 WASSCE results had been released and directing them to generate their PIN and check their results online.
Background on the Exam
Approximately 1.96 million candidates from more than 24,200 secondary schools across Nigeria sat for the examination, which was conducted between April 21 and June 19, 2026.
The examination was one of the largest educational exercises in the country, requiring coordination across thousands of examination centres, invigilators, examiners, and schools nationwide.

While most examination centres continued with the traditional pen-and-paper format, a significantly larger number of schools adopted the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) option compared to previous years, highlighting WAEC’s gradual shift toward digital examination delivery.
WAEC had earlier stated that results would be released approximately 45 days after the final paper, and the August 5 release aligns with that timeline.
Earlier this year, WAEC also released the results of the Computer-Based WASSCE for Private Candidates (First Series), which serves candidates writing the examination outside the regular school system.
2026 WASSCE Results Statistics
Total Number of Candidates
A total of 1,950,726 candidates sat for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
Overall Pass Rate
Out of the total candidates, 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54%, obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
This remains the minimum academic requirement for admission into most universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria and the West African region.
Comparison with Private Candidates
Earlier in 2026, WAEC released the Computer-Based WASSCE results for Private Candidates (First Series).
Out of 10,523 registered candidates, only 32.72% obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Registration for the private examination also increased by 11.49% compared to the previous year.
The lower pass rate is often attributed to the nature of private candidates, many of whom are retaking the examination or completing their secondary education outside the conventional school system.
